Holi
We’re not in India, but like Kenya, Tanzania has a large Indian population and it was decided we were going to celebrate Holi in our compound. Somewhere after lunch the decorations were built up, as well as the bouncy castle for the kids. And just after 4pm the party really kicked off.

Holi is a Hindu festival, also known as the festival of colour. It celebrates love and the start of spring, and the triumph of good over evil. It is usually held around the spring equinox. On the first day a bonfire is lit and prayers said to ensure the inner evil is destroyed. The next day people throw dry coloured powder at each other and get soaked in water. It is said that it celebrates love as Krishna (a blue diety) loved Radha, and he was worried his skin colour might cause an issue for her. So, on the advice of his wise mum, he coloured her face the same as his and now couples often colour their faces in the same colour to celebrate their love for each other.
We had been told to pick up some white Indian clothes so the colour would stand out well. So as we headed down we looked very crisp and clean, but that didn’t last long. Sanjiv, one of Jon’s colleagues, had spotted us and gave us the proper ‘welcome’. Now we were no longer white…

The guys organising had done a great job. There were dancers, a dj, water balloons, water guns, and of course lots and lots of dry paint (still not enough). Nobody was spared and the kids, and adults, were loving it!

After all the dancing and handing out the prizes, food was served. And as we were celebrating a Hindu festival the food was of course Indian. It was delicious. There was a lot of the standard fare, but some of the desserts were typical for the Holi festival. We particularly liked the carrot halwa, topped with lots of nuts. Delicious.
Ingredients for gajar ka halwa
- ½ tin (200gr) sweetened condensed milk
- 2 tbsp pure ghee or cooking oil
- 1 litre milk
- 1kg grated carrots
- 25gr chopped roasted cashew nuts
- ½ teaspoon of cardamom
- Fry the carrots in the ghee or oil until they are soft.
- Add milk to the carrots in a pan, bring to a boil.
- Cook on low flame, stirring occasionally until milk dries up.
- Add the sweetened condensed milk and continue cooking on low flame, again stirring occasionally until the milk dries up.
- Add a little bit of cardamom powder and cook for another two to three minutes.
- Garnish with nuts and raisins and serve hot.

Ik had jaren geleden via een andere website gezien dat jullie in Australië zaten en het daar prima naar jullie zin hadden. Ik dacht even dat jullie gestopt waren met bloggen, maar via Google kom je een heel eind natuurlijk.
Leuk om te zien wat jullie allemaal beleven en vooral dat het goed gaat met jullie 😁
Ik dacht ik laat toch even een berichtje achter! Met mij trouwens ook alles goed hoor.

Hi Mark, dat is zeker lang geleden! Ik durf niet te denken hoe lang geleden want dan realiseer ik me hoe oud we al wel niet zijn! hahahaha) Geen idee hoe je deze blog vond want mijn achternaam staat nergens toch? Anyway, leuk dat je hem gevonden hebt en een berichtje achterliet! Ja, tegenwoordig is Oost Africa home. Eerst in Kenya and nu in Tanzania 🙂 Weer eens wat anders als het kikkerlandje! En we vinden het geweldig om hier zoveel mogelijk te zien van alle mooie plekken die er zijn!
Goed om te horen dat het met jou ook goed gaat! Waar hang jij tegenwoordig uit? Zeeland of ook ergens anders?
Oh en Lara hebben we helaas moeten verkopen… 🙁 Die konden we niet meenemen naar Kenya want ze was te oud (1 maand maar te oud…). Ze is verkocht aan een jong stel die er nu Australie mee rond aan het reizen zijn! Dus ze leeft in ieder geval nog steeds een avontuurlijk leventje 🙂 En wie weet komt er nog wel eens een overlanding vehicle voor ons. Er zijn nog zoveel mooie plekken op deze wereld die we willen bekijken! 🙂

Ik heb je nu niet gevonden onder jouw achternaam, maar lang geleden heb ik je op 1 of ander manier gevonden bij sleepmonsters ofzo. Toen kwam ik terecht op een andere blog van jullie en zag ik dat je bekend was als Jude. Ik heb onlangs weer eens gezocht op Jon and Jude en kwam op deze blog uit 😁
Ik woon al ongeveer 19 jaar gelukkig samen met mijn vriendin Kitty in Vlissingen en ben wat minder avontuurlijk aangelegd om het maar zacht uit te drukken 😃
Sinds afgelopen woensdag ben ik met een vriend in Oostenrijk voor de Formule 1 in Spielberg op de Red Bull ring en vanmiddag gaan we kijken hoe Max het doet. Autosport heeft jouw interesse vast niet, maar ik meen ergens te hebben gelezen dat Jon wel iets met auto’s en racen heeft ☺
Jammer dat Lara niet meekon, maar ze leeft nog dus dat is fijn om te horen 👌…. jullie vinden vast weer wat anders.

super detective work 🙂 hahahaha Veel plezier bij de GP! Vind autosport leuker dan voetbal! En zelf racen is het leukste (slechts een keer gedaan…) 🙂 En ja, Jon heeft een historische race auto (Lotus) en was kampioen in zijn klasse in 2004 en 2005 (in Autralia) en hij kijkt de GP iedere week. Ik ben alleen naar de GP in Melbourne geweest en mocht ook door pit lane lopen, was wel super! Geniet van de blog (leuk dat je hem leest!
